Bridges and partial dentures
Why do I need to replace missing teeth?
bridgeTwo reasons, the main reason is your appearance; the other is there is a greater strain on the other teeth at both sides of the gap. A gap may affect your 'bite' too, that is, the teeth next to the missing one can lean into the gap and modify the way the upper and lower teeth fit and bite together. Food can also get packed into the gap, which can cause decay of the teeth next to the gap and gum disease.
How can we replace missing teeth?
The decision depends on the number of missing teeth, their position in the mouth and the condition of the neighboring teeth. There are two options. The first option: a removable false tooth or teeth which is called partial denture. The second option: a fixed bridge. A bridge is usually used if only few teeth are to be replaced, or if there are enough post teeth to hold it, or if some of the teeth can be replaced by implants.
What is a partial denture?
A partial denture is a plate with false teeth. It can be made of all plastic or a combination of metal and plastic. Both types can have clips (clasps), which help the denture remain in place. These clips are hardly noticeable, but depending on their position, they may show if you smile or open your mouth.
What materials are used for replacement teeth?
Plastic or porcelain, and each replacement tooth is made with special care, to get the right shape, color and size for each patient.
What is the difference between a plastic partial denture and one that contains metal?
Plastic partial dentures are cheaper, but the clips may damage the healthy teeth they fit against. Metal partial dentures are much stronger as they are made from an alloy of Cobalt and Chromium.
Patients find it more comfortable. The base is metal covered with gum-colored plastic and natural-looking teeth are fixed to it. The only disadvantage is its price. Metal partial dentures are more expensive than the plastic ones.
How should I look after my denture?
You should often remove your denture for cleaning. Your dentist will show you how to clean it. You can use a toothbrush and toothpaste, or soak it in a cleansing solution. For metal-based dentures, you may need a different cleansing solution.
Is there a fixed alternative to a partial denture?
Yes, you can also get a fixed bridge, if you have enough strong teeth with good bone support. You can't remove a fixed bridge. Bridges can be made of precious metal or non-precious metal with a porcelain coating.
A bridge spans the space between two teeth at either side of the missing teeth, and joins them together. The dentist prepares the two supporting teeth to be shaped for the crowns. Bridges are made in the dental laboratory and then cemented into place with adhesives.
How should I look after my bridge?
You should clean your bridge every day like your other teeth, and you also have to clean under the false tooth to prevent problems such as bad breath and gum disease. Besides a normal toothbrush, you can use a bridge needle or special floss as well.
Is there another fixed alternative without crowning the teeth on either side of the space?
Yes, you can have teeth attached to the jawbone by having implants. We will give you further information in our leaflet on implants.
