Fillings

A beaming smile, your best calling card!

What is a filling?
A tooth damaged by decay can be restored back to its normal function and shape with a filling. The dentist first removes the decayed tooth material, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cleaned out cavity with a filling material. By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay.

What materials are fillings made of?
Materials used for fillings include a composite resin (tooth-colored fillings or white fillings), gold, and porcelain, which are used in inlays. Dentists used to apply amalgam, which is an alloy of Mercury, Silver, Copper, Tin and sometimes Zinc, but we don't apply this material any longer.

Is it worth replacing amalgam fillings?
Yes. There are two reasons: if you change your amalgam fillings you can avoid problems of metal allergy and in this way you take care of your appearance. If you would like to replace them, you can ask to have it replaced by a tooth-colored material.

Tooth-colored fillings; also called White fillings or Composite (plastic) resins.
Filling inlayThese are mainly made of glass particles, synthetic resin and a hardening ingredient. Your dentist can give you more information about the particular material they use.

These have the same color as your teeth and therefore, are used where a natural appearance is desired. Composites may not be the ideal material for large fillings as they may chip or wear over time. They can also become stained from coffee, tea or tobacco, and do not last as long as other types of fillings; generally, from three to ten years.

Are there any alternatives to fillings?
There are alternatives such as crowns and inlays, although they are much more expensive than composite fillings. What's right for you will be determined by:

  • the extent of the repair,
  • your allergies to certain materials,
  • where in your mouth the filling is needed,
  • and the costs.

Considerations for different materials include:

  • Gold fillings which are called gold inlays are made in a laboratory and then cemented into place. Gold inlays are well tolerated by gum tissues, and may last more than 20 years. For these reasons, many authorities consider gold the best filling material. However, it is often the most expensive choice and requires multiple visits.
  • Porcelain fillings are called inlays or onlays and are produced to order in a lab and then bonded to the tooth. They can be matched to the color of the tooth and resist staining. A porcelain restoration generally covers most of the tooth.

Your dentist will recommend a crown (cap), if decay or a fracture has damaged a large portion of the tooth.
