Correction of inverted nipples

nverted nipples (retracted or invaginated nipples) may disturb patients for aesthetic and hygienic reasons as they may easier develop surface inflammation or cause problems during breast-feeding. Inverted nipples are usually caused by shorter mammary ducts or the shortness of the collagen fibres located here, as well as the insufficient amount of tissue under the nipples. The extent of inversion may be different, depending on the seriousness of the above-listed reasons.

According to these reasons, the shorter connective tissue fibres or the mammary ducts need to be released and add the necessary amount of tissue during the operation targeting to eliminate the inversion of the nipples and protract them. The most suitable type of corrective operation (nipple protraction) can be chosen based on the extent and shape of inversion.

The operation on inverted nipples may be performed under local or general anaesthesia. In the former case more inconveniences can be expected and the injections may cause some pain.

After the operation, a splint is placed on the breasts that must be worn for about 10 days. Boring pain and inconvenient sensation can be expected for a few days but these symptoms quickly disappear. Stitches may also be removed on approximately the tenth day.
