Double chin plastic

Double chin is an extra fold of tissue, occurring as a result of the accumulation of fat under the chin. It may be a result of bodily constitution, body weight gain or it may also occur as a consequence of the sagging skin on the neck.

If necessary, double chin plastic surgery may be combined with neck wrinkle surgery or can only be performed with it in case the sagging and looseness of the skin on the neck so desires.

Tasks before the operation

Before the aesthetic surgery of the double chin, certain examinations are needed:

The operation can be performed safely if the results of these examinations are available. If you smoke, take aspirin or other anticoagulants, anti-inflammatory drugs or other medicine, please let us know. These preparations may increase the tendency to bleeding or may result in other interactions during anaesthesia.

The operation

Double chin plastic surgery is more often performed with local anaesthesia or intravenous sedation than under general anaesthesia. In case of minor or medium-sized double chins, it is enough to get rid of the fat tissue under the skin by liposuction (suction-assisted fat removal). If your skin is no longer flexible enough or if there is a significant quantity of fat accumulated under the chin, liposuction is combined with skin resection. With today’s modern procedure, we do not only remove the excess volume of fat but we also tighten the thin muscle under the skin, thus improving the result and its durability. The incision is performed along the crease under the chin, in a hidden position. After liposuction and muscle reconstruction, we remove the unnecessary part of the skin.

The operation generally only deals with the double chin but, if necessary; it can be extended to the entire neck and the lower two-thirds of the face. Double chin plastic surgery does not include facial and neck plastic treatment but in most cases we complement it with plastic surgery of the face and the neck. In general, the best result can be reached if the skin of the face and the neck are treated at the same time. Facial, neck and double chin plastic surgery may be combined with liposuction or fat filling.

After complete recovery the operation scars are almost invisible or they are in a hidden position.

At the end of the plastic surgery treatment, we cover the wounds with gauze dressing and apply flexible pressure bandage.

Tasks following the operation

Following plastic surgery treatments performed under local anaesthetics, patients may go home after the operation is completed. Relaxation and maximum gentleness is recommended after plastic surgery of the double chin in every case. The 1-3 days following the operation may pose more inconveniences but this is only a temporary problem, caused by the post-operational oedema and the straining effect of the fixing stitches. These may be natural accompanying symptoms of the operation.

Stitch removal can generally be expected after 2 weeks, when tenseness has significantly decreased.

On the first few days after the treatment it is useful to sleep propped up and mainly eat squashy food that is easy to chew. It is forbidden to perform any such activity that may cause haematosis in the face or the neck! E.g. exertion; exposure to excessive heat; consumption of hot or very spicy food or alcohol.

It is recommended to wear the special flexible bandage for 1-2 weeks. Refrain from any demanding sports or physical activity for 6 weeks after the plastic surgery. You must avoid sun-bathing and solariums in this period. 10 days after the operation it is possible to apply a thin layer of make-up to cover the slight discoloration. The make-up must not be put on the scar! After the period of extra care expires, the scars must be treated and protected with sun-blocking creams for a long time!

Patients must go to regular check-ups after every plastic surgery treatment, including double chin plastic surgery. The frequency of these visits depends on the nature of the treatment and other characteristic features. During the control examinations performed on the prescribed dates, we examine the operated area and discuss the further things to do.
